The Carroll Gardens Library Comes Back December 1, With Its Vaulted Ceiling in Full View

"It's an old-school, traditional library, but it's in the 21st century," branch manager John Leighton told The Carroll Gardens Times last month, when Brooklyn Public Library let the newsletter in to see the renovated branch at 396 Clinton Street. On Tuesday, December 1, at 2pm, everyone else gets to see it.

The branch at the corner of Union Street closed in July 2023 for a renovation scheduled to take 18 to 24 months. It will have been closed for more than three years. The biggest delay came from the 1905 barrel-vaulted ceiling. Workers had to reinforce it before the new heating and cooling system could go in, and taking out the old ductwork means the ceiling is now more visible than it has been in decades.

Why a Two-Year Job Took More Than Three

Two agencies split the renovation, and that split shaped the schedule. According to Brooklyn Public Library's branch page, the city's Department of Design and Construction managed Part 1. That covered a new heating and cooling system, a teen space on the mezzanine, new architectural lighting on the main floor, and upgraded fire alarm and safety systems. BPL took Part 2: elevator modernization, bathroom upgrades and a water fountain.

Part 1 is where the schedule slipped. Council Member Shahana Hanif's August newsletter, as the Brooklyn Eagle reported in March, said DDC had opened up the vaulted ceiling and found it needed additional structural reinforcement before it could carry the new HVAC units. The Carroll Gardens Times put it more specifically: the new rooftop system needed additional steel supports. "As with many renovation projects in older buildings, a few unexpected challenges slowed the schedule," BPL said in an update the Eagle quoted.

The reopening date moved several times:

  1. July 2023. The branch closes, with an 18-to-24-month renovation ahead.
  2. July 2025. The original completion date passes.
  3. Winter 2026. BPL moves the target to summer 2026. Crews are replacing the ceiling and installing lighting, and Part 1 is tentatively expected to finish in April.
  4. Fall 2026. BPL reports that the major milestones are complete and that it is well into the final, six-month second phase.
  5. December 1, 2026, 2pm. The confirmed reopening.

When BPL announced the date, the elevator was the main piece of work still left. Officials told The Carroll Gardens Times they had no concerns about meeting December 1. Everything remaining, elevator included, falls under BPL's own control and budget.

The city's capital records give a budget for Part 1. NYC Databook lists an $8.4 million budget as of May 2026 for the DDC project titled "Carroll Gardens HVAC & Teen Ctr." That figure covers the city-managed work only, not BPL's share. BPL's part got a boost in October 2024, when State Senator Andrew Gounardes announced $230,000 for the improvements the community had asked for. BPL lists Gounardes, Council Member Hanif, Assemblymember Jo Anne Simon, District 39's participatory budgeting voters, and Mayoral and City Council capital funds as the project's funders.

The Ceiling, Uncovered

The delay and the result come from the same work. Before the renovation, the branch's air-conditioning ran through ducts that partly blocked the vault. Those ducts are gone. In their place are thin vents, and The Carroll Gardens Times reports that the ceiling can now be seen "in a way that it hasn't been in decades."

The new lighting is the work of Domingo Gonzalez Associates, the firm behind the lighting of the Washington Square Arch. BPL describes the result as "modernized infrastructure, and restored historic details," set inside a main room of more than 14,000 square feet that still has its original barrel-vaulted ceiling.

The architect, William Bunker Tubby, was a Brooklyn Heights resident who also designed Pratt Institute's South Hall and Student Union, and the first main building of Brooklyn Friends School on Schermerhorn Street. The Eagle notes that the branch was one of 21 Brooklyn libraries built with Andrew Carnegie's endowment, and that 18 of them are still standing. Hoodline describes the design as Classical Revival, with Ionic columns and Harvard brick.

For most of its history it went by another name. The building opened as the Carroll Park Library and became the Carroll Gardens Library in 1973. Hoodline reports that the change followed a community petition.

The Smaller Changes Inside

Some of the work is easy to miss. The renovated mezzanine is now a dedicated teen space, which BPL planned from the start in 2023. BPL's Part 2 list includes new and restored shelving, renovated bathrooms and a modernized elevator.

According to The Carroll Gardens Times, library staff are even thrilled about the water fountain. It is the library's first drinking fountain, and a new wall had to be built to hold its plumbing.

The branch's regulars are coming back too. During the closure, some Carroll Gardens staff worked at the pop-up and others were reassigned to Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope and other branches in BPL's 62-branch system. BPL lists Toddler Time and wellness activities for older adults as the branch's most popular programs. "Once we're open, we're open," BPL senior press officer Fritzi Bodenheimer told The Carroll Gardens Times. The branch will open with full hours and a full staff.

The Gap Between November 6 and December 1

The temporary library at 250 Baltic Street, outfitted with furniture donated by IKEA Brooklyn, closes tomorrow, Friday, November 6. Its last day runs from 10am to 2pm. The Carroll Gardens Times reports that the gap gives staff time to move books and materials back to Clinton Street.

BPL has said the pop-up handles borrowing, returns and holds pickup. Its branch page does not yet say how holds and returns work between the two dates, so if you have holds that will be waiting, ask staff at Baltic Street before it closes. Four nearby locations stay open in the meantime:

Location Address Status
Pacific Library 25 Fourth Avenue Regular branch hours
Brooklyn Heights Library 286 Cadman Plaza West Regular branch hours
Park Slope Library 431 Sixth Avenue Regular branch hours
Red Hook Pop-Up 362 Van Brunt Street Weekdays, 10am to 5pm

Red Hook's permanent branch is also closed for renovation, so the Van Brunt Street site is a temporary one.

Officials have promised a ribbon-cutting and community celebration before the reopening. The date and program have not been announced yet. Friends of Carroll Gardens Library, the volunteer group that advocates and raises money for the branch, takes inquiries at [email protected].

The Carroll Gardens Library had to reinforce a 120-year-old vault before it could bring its systems up to date, and houses from the same era in the area raise the same kinds of questions about what lies behind the plaster.
